HELP THE ANIMALS OF CUMBERLAND COUNTY

Normally I take the weekends off from blogging and take long cat naps. Today, however, I must break this ritual. It has come to my attention that here in Tennessee a terrible thing is about to happen. On Monday, 30 or more animals will be euthanized in Cumberland County. Apparently a contract between the Human Society and the county has run out, leaving innocent animals to die in the process.

I really do not know what to do about it or how to help, but I figure telling enough people might be a start.

  • Here is a link to the WBIR story -www.wbir.com
  • Here is a link to the Human Society of Cumberland County - www.cumberlandhumanesociety.org (oddly there are no animals listed on the site as of this posting, nor any reference to this issue).
  • Here is a link to Cumberland County Mayor Brock Hill - www.brockhill.org

Draft of a potential letter to Brock Hill that you might consider asking your humans to email to him (you can use the email form at http://www.brockhill.org/index.php3?gcode=cont):

Dear Mr. Hill,

Life is about more than contractual obligations. With Cumberland County's issues with the Humane Society and the end of their contract with the county, it will lead to the execution of several animals, who are innocent pawns in the game of contracts, politics, and lawyers. Please look beyond these superficial pursuits and find the compassion in your hearts to extend some sort of reprieve for the animals.

There is no dispute that your contract was made known to the Human Society, but currently they need your support in helping these animals. The animals' death will be a reflection on your regime in office. Do you want their blood on your hands? Think about it, if you rise above the legalities that you are citing, it is a gesture of good will, a show of compassion during a time when such acts are desperately needed.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

(your name here).

That's terrible. I hope the animals' lives are spared. Only good thing is maybe many of them will be adopted or fostered if the situation is getting a lot of attention.

WE are a bit puzzeled why the Cumberland Humane Society (ironic name, that, at least the 'Humane' part) seems to be getting a free pass on this issue.

It sounds like the 'Humane' Society is gonna kill all these animals out of spite if they can't pressure Mayor Hill into putting more money in the till.

Once again a 'Humane' Society is anything but in practice.

According to this site, most of the animals have been adopted and those remaining will not be euthanized. I was so relieved to read that, I hope you will be too. Thanks for raising public awareness about the situation by posting it on your blog!

Oh dear, this is very upsetting. Unfortunately we are just reading it on Monday, but will try sending an email anyway. Hope we're not too late.
